Cost Share Program
Increasing accessibility to local, organic food to people of all income levels
Discounted CSA Shares
During the summer growing season, the Cost Share Program offsets the cost of HCCSA Shares for low-income individuals & families. Cost Share Program members can choose from our 3 shares options and receive a $200 discount off the total cost. Members of the program receive a $300 Garden Share for only $100, or a $600 Harvest or Variety Share for only $400. Members can pay in monthly installments over the course of the season using EBT/SNAP benefits. The other $200 is paid for with grant funding and donations from community members to the Cost Share Fund. Potential Cost Share Program members must receive EBT, WIC, or Medicaid benefits, or be identified through a relevant organization, such as the Community Care Clinic or the Children's Council.
Cost Share Program membership is a season-long commitment. While the payments are divided into installments, the full amount must be paid by the end of the season. Members must pay the entire amount even if they miss a pickup because their share is delivered every week and we need to pay the farmers for their produce.
Would you like to join us? We are offering shares on a first-come, first-serve basis. To sign up, please review, complete, and return the membership application form to us with a downpayment. Contact us with any questions at highcountrycsa [at] gmail [dot] com.
Catalog Order Discount
Cost Share Program members also receive a discount when ordering through our online catalog. During the summer, we offered a 50% discount through the catalog (June through October). During the winter ordering program, we are offering a 50% discount to our summer Cost Share Program members as well as anyone who uses an EBT to purchase their order (November through March), as long as funding allows.
Funding and Donations
The High Country CSA Cost Share Program is funded through community donations and grant money from the Appalachian District Health Department and Heifer International's Seeds of Change Initiative. The Cost Share Program is not only an HCCSA initiative, but is also a pilot project serving as example and trial about how to better increase accessibility to local, high quality food to individuals of all income levels. Through increasing this accessibility, we not only improve the health of our community members, but also support our local farmers, economy, and community resiliency.
To donate to the Cost Share Program Fund, please send a check to: HCCSA, 410 Justus Rd, Banner Elk NC 28604. Please include 'cost share donation' in the memo line. All donations are 100% tax deductible and we will send you a thank you letter/receipt. HCCSA is a project of Maverick Farms, a 501(c)3 nonprofit.
The highest program membership during our pilot 2012 season included 35 families. By the end of the season, we had 25 Cost Share Program families. All the Cost Share Program members received Garden Shares during 2012. For 2013, Program members can choose from any of the our 3 share options with the same $200 discount.
We have learned about reaching eligible individuals, communicating program features and requirements, and program execution. These lessons will be shared with the community via the Seeds of Change Initiative and other community meetings. They will also improve the program and program member retention for the 2013 season.
