Week 4: On-farm workday, recipes & next week's share

Rain is a good thing.

Although it made for a wet pickup, we are so thankful for the rain. . . although we could have done without the marble-sized hail!  The heat and dry weather have been hard on local farms, so pouring rain is a welcome sound this time of year.  Next week, we will once again have a variety of greens, including (if the weather permits) bok choi, kale, and chard.  We’re also hoping to have some herbs once again, as well as garlic, onions, and carrots.

Produce share and growers for 6/14

This past Tuesday for our pickup we had the following produce from these growers --

Beets - Tumbling Shoals

Greens mix - Maverick Farms & Springhouse Farm

Fennel - Tumbling Shoals

Kale - Lively Up

Green Garlic - New River Organic Growers (Watauga River Farms)

Green Onion - New River Organic Growers & Springhouse Farms

Lettuce - Tumbling Shoals

Snap peas - New River Organic Growers

Radishes - Springhouse Farm

Swiss Chard - Springhouse Farm

Summer Newsletter 3 - 2011

What will be in your share for next week?

The recent lack of rain and heat last week has been changing almost daily what we plan to offer for your weekly shares.  The combination of heat, lots of sunshine, and no water has meant that some of our crops (greens, carrots, strawberries) have not been doing as well as we had hoped.  Thankfully, due to our farmers’ hard work and irrigation projects, they will still be able to offer lettuce and kale, as well as beets amongst a few other produce items.
