Week 12: Okra

For our upcoming share this Tuesday, we plan to provide more peppers, potatoes, tomatillos, herbs, beans, watermelon, and – new this week – okra and eggplant.  Last week, Wiebe Farmin’ provided us with our Sugar Baby watermelon, and this week Wiebe Farmin’ will provide us with another variety of watermelon, Crimson Sweet, which look like standard watermelons and are super sweet.

Okra

Okra is “mucilaginous,” which is a complicated term to describe plants that produce “goo” when cooked.  To minimize the amount of goo secreted when you cook okra, it is suggested that you cook it quickly (stir fry, for example) or cook it with acidic ingredients, like tomatoes, vinegar, or citrus fruits.  If this is going to be your first cooking adventure with okra, an okra gumbo recipe may be a good place to start.

Fruit shares

Several fruit share members have been asking when we plan to have the next fruit come in.  Our fruit farmers’ berry crop has been struggling, but we’ll have fruit coming in soon.  Our farmer said that grapes and mountain kiwis will be the next fruit we can expect.
